This policy explains what VinRev Journal collects when you visit vinrevjournal.com, why, and what you can do about it. We’ve written it in plain language rather than legalese.
VinRev Journal is an independent publication covering automotive marketing, published by Branden Bodendorfer. Questions about this policy go to support@brandenbodendorfer.com.
If you email us or submit a form, we receive whatever you send: your name, email address, and your message. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store the email address you provide. That’s it. We don’t ask for a phone number, a company, or a job title.
Like most websites, ours records technical information when you visit. That includes your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, the pages you view, how long you stay, and the site or search that referred you.
Three services collect information through this site. Each is described below, with a link to opt out.
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles get read and how people arrive. It sets cookies and records page views, session length, and general location at the city level. It does not tell us who you are.
You can opt out with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. Google’s own practices are described in the Google Privacy Policy.
We use Microsoft Clarity to see how readers actually use the site. This one deserves a clear explanation, because it goes further than page-view analytics.
Clarity records your session. It captures mouse movement, scrolling, clicks, and which parts of a page you read, then reconstructs that as a playback and as heatmaps. We use it to find articles people abandon halfway and buttons nobody can find.
Clarity masks text input by default, so what you type into a form is not captured. We do not use it to identify individual readers, and we don’t try to match a recording to a person.
Microsoft describes how it handles this data in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
This site displays advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads to you based on your visit to our site or other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings. For opting out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising, visit aboutads.info.
Third-party vendors, including Google, may show our ads on sites across the internet. We do not control which specific ads appear.
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. This site uses them for three purposes:
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies in its settings. Blocking them will not break your ability to read articles here, though some things may behave oddly.
To publish and improve the site. Specifically: deciding what to write next based on what gets read, fixing pages people struggle with, answering the emails you send us, sending the newsletter if you asked for it, and keeping the site secure.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your email address with advertisers, and we do not rent or trade subscriber lists.
Google Analytics data is retained on Google’s standard schedule. Clarity recordings expire on Microsoft’s schedule, which is currently 30 days. Emails you send us are kept as long as they’re useful for correspondence. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We don’t sell it, but the right exists.
Residents of the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have these rights under the GDPR. California residents have comparable rights under the CCPA and CPRA. Other states and countries have their own versions.
To make a request, email support@brandenbodendorfer.com. We’ll respond within the time your local law requires, and within 30 days otherwise. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on a request.
To unsubscribe from the newsletter, use the unsubscribe link in any issue.
Some browsers send a Do Not Track signal. There’s no agreed standard for responding to it, so this site does not currently respond to those signals. The opt-out links above do work.
This site is written for people working in the automotive industry and is not directed at children under 13. We don’t knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, email us and we’ll delete it.
We link out to other sites regularly, since that’s part of reporting. Once you follow a link, you’re on someone else’s site under their policy, not ours. Worth reading theirs.
This site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold. No website can promise perfect security, and we won’t pretend otherwise.
When we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top. Material changes will be noted on the site. If you keep using the site after a change, that’s acceptance of the updated policy.
